The creation of (CAD)² was a personal project. I started a public Instagram account that will not only showcase my work, but the work of others that I greatly admire. Along with the Instagram account, I created my own personal logo and business card in order to brand and promote myself outside of social media.

The name needed to be short and simple yet relate to myself and the content that I produce and post. The final result is a combination of two things: the initials of my name – Chesley Anne De Leon – and an acronym for create, admire, and design. Hence, (CAD)². As a self-taught and freelance graphic designer, a historic preservationist, and an aspiring urban designer, I have a wide range of interests. However, when it comes down to it, I focus on three things:

To create – I always thought that creating things was just a hobby of mine. However, while I was obtaining my B.A. in Historic Preservation, I learned how to use numerous computer programs, took some art classes, and used those resources to produce a medley of creative things. Something that I dabbled in, turned into my passion.

To admire – A crucial reason why I became passionate about all things creative is because I developed an admiration for the work produced by others. I greatly appreciate and enjoy exploring areas with rich history, vibrant arts scenes, diverse architecture, good walkability, and urban open space. I am inspired by the people who created these environments because they share the same goals and interests as me.

To design – Create and design go a bit hand in hand. However, design involves more planning during the creative process. As a graphic designer, I must convey a message in simple yet eye-catching way. As an aspiring urban designer, I will have to deal with issues and have goals in mind in order to design a functional, attractive, and sustainable environment.

Combining these three actions will successfully lead me to my goal of bettering economies and communities through the arts, preservation, and revitalization.
