During Norfolk’s annual Neon Festival, the Hampton Roads Chapter of AIGA (American Institute of Graphic Arts), hosts SPARK – a juried poster exhibition that explores the issues that are meaningful to the community. The outdoor exhibition takes place in the NEON District along Magazine Lane. For the 2018 SPARK Poster Show, AIGA Hampton Roads asked the creative community, “How can you create positive change in your community?” In order to spark change with the power of design, I submitted my design, Growing Change, and it was selected to be displayed during the exhibition.

Just as a flower needs sunlight and water to blossom, a community needs its own source of light and water to flourish. There are many components that need to be practiced and implemented in order to create change in a community. My poster, Growing Change, depicts a few of these elements that successfully lead to positive change in a community. You must engage by actively volunteering and lending a helping hand. Be bold and express your concerns and thoughts but remember to listen to others so you can learn from their past experiences. However, you will encounter obstacles because change happens gradually and you will not get everyone’s support. So keep up the good vibes with positivity and perseverance. Most importantly, the driving force that made you want to create positive change is that you are showing your community some TLC – tender loving care. This place has become your home and there are several aspects that you already love about it, but now you want to give back and create a memorable connection that will positively impact your community for future generations.
