Since the peak season was right around the corner, Preservation Virginia’s Old Cape Henry Lighthouse in Virginia Beach, VA wanted to sell new and improved t-shirts at the lighthouse’s museum shop. Three different designs were created to be printed onto the t-shirts.
The first design is the front logo on the t-shirts. It clearly states the name of the site and its location. During the day, a lighthouse is distinguishable based on its exterior. The front logo showcases Old Cape Henry’s Rappahannock sandstone exterior walls and copper lantern room.
The second design is printed onto the back of the t-shirts. The design consists of two architectural drawings of Old Cape Henry in its current state. One is a drawing of the South elevation and the other is a cross section drawing in order to show the interior of the lighthouse. Since Old Cape Henry is the first public works project of the U.S. and has been strongly standing for more than 225 years, it is an architectural feat of its time.
The third design is also printed onto the back of the t-shirts. The design has the Old Cape Henry light shining over waves. The lighthouse was first lit on November 17, 1792. Although the light was extinguished and decommissioned in December 1881, the tower is still fixed at the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay due to its historical ties to the Founding Fathers.
